The Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) has a long history of providing special topic workshops and series of training courses for in-service transportation professionals in consulting firms and at state-level DOTs. The Center developed a nationally recognized two-day course on Context-Sensitive Design/Solutions.  This course was delivered on-site to 15 state DOTs and over 175 professionals have participated in limited-size courses delivered on UK’s campus.  In addition, the Center has many short course offerings for highway staffs at the local level as part of its workforce training program.

One of the higher education initiatives KTC focuses on is the development of multidisciplinary transportation related professionals.  This special certificate program (Transportation Systems Management) was initiated with funding from the Southeastern University Transportation Center led by the University of Tennessee.  More recently these funds have been supplemented with Congressionally-mandated funding directly to KTC.  This program includes two specially designed graduate level courses and is only open to graduate students pursuing a graduate level degree in a transportation related discipline such as: civil engineering, geography, public administration, or business administration.  The program provides supplemental funding for each graduate student and supports their travel to regional/national transportation conferences.  Although only six to ten students are selected each year, over 125 graduate students have successfully completed the certificate program.

KTC also works with the University of Louisville.  Previously, KTC developed several web-based courses in civil engineering and industrial engineering.  Currently, several additional graduate level courses are under development to include logistics (with the University of Louisville) and sustainability.  It is intended that these courses become options for graduate students participating in the Transportation Systems Management program and be made available as web based courses available for professional development.
