High Value Research

Occasionally we have to be reminded of the value of research in the public sector.  There is an endless call for things to be improved and for stretching the dollar to cover more. We all want to see bottom line results -- especially when it concerns research that is publically funded.  The following provides a glimpse of the results of the applied problem-solving research conducted by the Kentucky Transportation Center.  These science-based solutions provide real and measurable benefits to the people of Kentucky and the nation.  Our research is literally keeping bridges erect and tunnels open, not to mention providing recommendations for improved policies and materials that allow for our transportation infrastructure to remain effective and efficient.

We direct you to several areas where you can learn about some of the most valuable research we have conducted in the past decade:

  • Recently Completed NCHRP (Transportation Research Board) Projects
    • Quantifying the Benefits of Context Sensitive Solutions (N. Stamatiadis, PE, A. Kirk PE/AICP, et. al.), NCHRP Report 642, 2009
    • Impact of Shoulder Width and Median Width on Safety ( N. Stamatiadis, PE, J. Pigman, PE, et. al.), NCHRP Report 633, 2008
  • Recent Published Papers and Conference Presentations (link to…)
    • Practical Solution Concepts for Planning and Designing Roadways (N. Stamatiadis, A. Kirk, PE/AICP, et. al.), Journal of Transportation Engineering, Volume 136, Issue 4, April 2010
    • New York City Bridge Conference Paper, Addressing SCC-Susceptible ASTM A 514 Steel on the I-275 Twin Bridges Over the Ohio River (T. Hopwood II, PE, et. al.), April 2009
