Finance and Economics

An integral part of the provision of transportation infrastructure, facilities, and maintenance is how transportation departments pay for these services.  As publically funded investments, governments are scrutinized for their policies guiding the use of tax dollars for transportation related projects.  Both government officials and the general public want to ensure that public funds are utilized in the most effective manner in providing a safe and efficient transportation system.

In cooperation with the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, and the Center for Business and Economic Research, the Kentucky Transportation Center provides research in transportation finance and economics, focusing on a variety of transportation funding questions.  Previous research has included; evaluations of innovative transportation financing options; impacts of state road debt limitations; financing the transportation system through public-private partnerships; allocations of highway costs and revenues; and allocating IFTA and IRP fuel taxes across multiple jurisdictions. Our goal is to provide quality independent research to policy makers, enhancing the productivity and quality of life for all citizens in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.
