Knowledge Exchange

This branch of the Kentucky Transportation Center is involved in research, work force training, technical assistance, education, and professional development.  Our research in decision support systems has grown out of problem solving activities regarding highway and public transportation.  However, the advanced techniques that have been developed for public involvement and visualization and the criteria for planning and development decisions, is being applied in broader contexts.  These include electrical transmission line routing and various land use decisions at the local, regional and national levels.

The Center’s traditional technology transfer activities (the LTAP programs) have garnered national recognition for its workforce training offerings.  In addition, the Center also offers technical assistance activities, including a safety circuit rider for local governments and the soon-to-be established bridge preservation circuit rider.  Both of these initiatives are data-driven and have the benefit of providing advanced research couple with practical solutions from our Center’s staff.

The Center also provides educational (college level) and professional development courses.  Our university level program initiatives involve graduate students in transportation related disciplines with the aim of achieving a certificate in Transportation Systems Management.  Another important initiative is our nationally recognized two-day professional development course in Context Sensitive Design.  This course is provided on-site to state Departments of Transportation.
