Structures

The purpose of the Structures program is to evaluate, monitor, and strengthen new and existing structures by employing high performance materials.  Field testing allows the program to compose finite element structure models and then simulate natural disasters and time lapse to test how the structure will withstand various obstacles.  In addition, new technology is tested to determine its effectiveness in reinforcing both new and existing structures.

Much of the work is bridge-related.  The Structures program works in cooperation with Pavements and Bridge Preservation to promote more durable structures using special technology, like structure health monitoring.  This process allows them to make more efficient, innovative decisions via SmartBridge technology.  They also use retrofit technology to strengthen bridge structures by incoporating carbon fiber laminates and other high performance materials.
